New Muses Project (NMP) is pleased to announce a call for candidates to be considered for our initial Board of Directors. This is an opportunity to contribute during an exciting time for our organization as we develop a strategic Plan and Budget with an emphasis on establishing a blueprint of projects and activities that both reflect our mission and are financially sustainable.

About New Muses Project

New Muses Project is a DEI-focused classical music initiative which builds an innovative new way of approaching composers and their music. We believe that curiosity is the key to creating diversity in classical music by making the field more adventurous and accessible. Our platform is an interactive web app that provides interesting recommendations of composers to explore, complete with engaging profiles of each individual. Our additional projects include organizing performances and events, conducting musicological research, and publishing transcriptions and recordings of never-heard-before music.

Why serve on the NMP Board of Directors?

By getting involved with New Muses Project, you’ll have the opportunity to directly support social justice work in classical music. It is an exciting time to be involved in DEI initiatives in classical music, as a growing number of organizations are embracing a diversity-oriented mindset. Serving on the Board is also an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional development, as well as a chance to connect more deeply with musicians, scholars, classical music lovers, and other members of the field.

Who we’re looking for

NMP is looking for community members from diverse backgrounds, and with varied skill sets, perspectives, and voices, to help NMP execute its strategic vision and contribute their expertise to grow our capacity and impact. We thrive on passion for advocacy and commitment to tackling social justice issues within Western classical music. BIPOC, women, trans and non-binary people, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, neurodivergent candidates, and those with disabilities are especially encouraged.

What we’re looking for

While all members of the community with an interest in serving NMP are encouraged to apply, we are particularly interested in candidates who have background and experience in one or more of the following key areas:

  1. Financial sustainability

We are seeking candidates with financial acumen to be our new Treasurer, with a view to help NMP increase the organization’s long-term financial and operational sustainability.

  2. Advancement and fund development experience

We’re looking for Board members to help us devise strategies for funding, with a focus on blueprinting for long-term financial success.

  3. Strategic partnerships and community engagement

We’re looking for Board candidates who bring enthusiasm, a strategic mindset, and the ability to effectively communicate NMP’s mission to help us develop partnerships with organizations nationwide.

  4. Marketing and communications

We’re looking for Board members with marketing and communications expertise to help us increase our reach in the classical music community.

What’s expected of NMP Board members?

NMP Board of Directors is both a governance and a working board. This means that, in addition to being representatives of New Muses Project, our board members dedicate some of their willing time or resources working on organizational projects, based on their expertise and interest.

Board members are expected to attend two online annual board meetings. Furthermore, as part of a working board, NMP Board members are expected to dedicate about 5 hours per month working on NMP business during this exciting time of development. This includes attending remote meetings with fellow board members and relevant follow-up tasks.

Once appointed, NMP Board members serve a two-year term.
